Without the use of third party software.
Tip passed to me by my neighbor.
1- go to start>>>run>>>command
2- write cd.. (notice the two dots) and press enter
write cd.. (again) and press enter
3- write (cd windows) and press enter
4- write (cd system32) and press enter
5- write (setup) and enter
If you get this message
(Please switch to the control panel to install components and systems composition)
Then that means your PC is clean
The idea here is the (setup) file which are located within (system32) is shut down when your PC is infected and open when your PC is not infected
because most viruses shut down all system.exe extensions
you should try it. It works 100%

Hi Oldie - didn't work for me as all it did was open a copy of wordpad with a message saying it could not find "cd" - which is what I would have expected!
Have you got the syntax right?

Albert CD = Change Directory , DOS command CD\ command takes you to the root of C CD.. takes you back up a directory
C:\>cd windows\system32
C:\WINDOWS\system32>setup Quote:

Yeah - I do know my DOS commands! (minor frump attack!) This is why I said that the instruction at the command prompt did what I expected to!
You are forgiven - but what is this all about? Does it have any merit at all?
Is it like telling someone to run the DIR command at the command prompt and all is well if they see a directory listing?

I think you people have been confused by Oldie's explanation, when he says write he means for you to type in to the command window whatever the next word / command is, in this case it is CD followed by any further command or switch.
It seems to me that some of you are typing this in the command window write cd..
which will bring up the WordPad application because thats what the command write does
what you should''ve typed in is cd..
Anyway, all this is academic as it's all a load of b0ll0x, I dont know where your neighbor got the info about doing this determining that your PC does not have a virus on it but its HOGWASH!!

| This might have worked under a controlled scenario where you know where the virus is but virus today just aren't that neat and tidy.
Won't work.
