What I want to know about the PS3 is if they'll be releasing the 80GB version over here. Everybody wants a 60GB one and they sell for extraordinary prices on eBay (some upwards of £500) and it's the model that I would buy if I had the money and they still made them.

For anyone who wants to know what model has what features, see here.

For some ridiculous reason, the only model they'll sell over here is the 40GB one, wen I'm fairly sure people will empty the shelves of 80GB ones if they shipped them over. What puts me off the 40GB one is the fact that it can't play PS2 games, which is ridiculous as well. I wouldn't be so bothered about it not having a media card reader if they gave us the simple luxury of backwards compatibility, the same as every other model.

I don't plan on getting a PS3 until I've bought an HDTV, so hopefully by then there'll be another model or they'll be selling the 80GB one here.

You probably could chip your PS3 to play PS2 games, but as always TST doesn't condone copying games and whatnot. It's naughty!

I doubt the 60GB version will come back as they've stopped making it, they're more likely to ship the 80GB version over here. Which is good in a way, as it has more features and whatnot, but it'll cost shed-loads.

I've also heard this, however no one knows how true it is as Sony have yet to comment.

Quote:
An anonymous Best Buy employee has sent us a scan of an internal letter, which notifies employees that the 80GB system is being discontinued. "The 80GB version of the PS3 is going closeout and won't be replaced at this time," it reads. "It will come off the planogram on Jan. 28. The 60GB version should already be gone from stores. Only the 40GB version of PS3 will be sold in Best Buy stores at this time."

Exactly, mate. IMO they should have never stopped making the 60GB version.

Although borrowing Jason's quote:
This might not mean that the actual model is being discontinued, just that Best Guy won't be selling it any more. A planogram is a plan of how the shop's shelves should be arranged, and if they're saying that it's being taken off of that, then it means that they won't be stocking them any more.

Where it says "the 80GB system is being discontinued", this may not mean what it sounds like. Many times I have tried ordering things in at work and found out on the delivery note that they're discontinued, only to be sent the discontinued product that I ordered as a substitute to something I've ordered in to replace it. Saying that, this is about the frozen department of a convenience store, and not an electronics store, so it may be different for them.

Either way, if Sony aren't commenting, it either means that it is being discontinued and they don't want to say yet, or it's not being discontinued and there's just some confusion in the letter that I have just explained. I suppose we'll just have to wait and see what Sony say.

Well, no one can confirm this, only Sony. So until they comment, don't listen to all these rumours.

The rumored bundle will be packed with either a 120GB or a 160GB hard drive and a Dual Shock 3 controller, while keeping the same $499 price point as the 80GB model - No word on backwards compatibility, though. If the rumors turn out to be true, the 80GB console will be the third SKU axed in just over a year since the console’s release.
If there will be a 120GB PS3 it better have backwards compatibility

Again, this is all just rumors again, and we won't know anything until Sony says something. I think a 120GB and 160GB versions will be good, though, but getting rid of three different models so quickly doesn't really look very good.

So, any new PS3 news? Is the new 120GB PS3 going to have backwards compatibility with PS2 games?

I haven't heard anything yet, mate. Checked DailyTech and there's no new PS3 posts since "Activision Forecasts Xbox 360 to Outsell PS3 in 2008" and "IBM Shrinks Cell/B.E. to 45nm Process". The one before that is the post about having 3 SKU's.
