The Game Demo: Thing of the past?

Game demos. They were very popular for an exorbitant amount of time and for the reasons we gamers all know far too well. Typically, you desire something new. A break from the ordinary. A chance to sample what could very well be a masterpiece of fiction and gaming excellence. And the demos lately have proven very fruitful and rewarding for those who could not afford to buy the whole thing or just needed a taste of what was to come.

But as abruptly as they came, they have now seemingly ceased. The latest games that came out recently, which were the talk of the town, did not come with a playable demo. Far Cry 2, Fallout 3, Crysis Warhead; all of these wonderful games left their users high and dry with nothing to do but spend $150 and get all three.

Sadly, I am one of the unlucky few that has a cash inflow problem. And I could only run to the end of my chain and bark at these beautiful games. I'm sure that those of you out there who are also monetarily challenged were also very excited about these same games and saddened when no demo was made available.

What has become of the demo we've all come to love? Are we now playing to rules that are similar to seeing a movie? All we get now is a teaser in HD, and if we want the whole thing we have to go and pay out the nose.

Why, God? Why?

Demos used to be everywhere on magazine covers..
I liked to see what a game was like before i bought it

I think that perhaps the game manufactures are worried that the demos will discourage potential buyers. Without the demos, you have to buy the game to find out that it performs poorly on your system or is a mediocre rehash of a previous version.

I think I can say why Crysis warhead didn't have a demo. Probably because it was a expansion of the first crysis game. So they felt they didn't need one. But I agree I like the demos.
Speaking of demos, have you gotten the cod5 beta Link? Its awesome!
Oh and one more thing about crysis warhead. I hope there is a patch out for it now. They had some terrible glitches when you got to a certain part. I was getting 50 fps and lagging horribly. Seemed it was happening to everybody. Or most everybody. Good game so far though. Haven't played it in a while because of that.
Just thought of something. All three games you mentioned are all sequels or expansions. Maybe thats why there wasn't a demo for them. But still your right, demos are awesome. They should keep doing them, even if it is a sequel or expansion.

The fact that the new games were sequels or expansions never stopped developers before. And the whole point of the demo in the first place was to persuade people to buy the game. Why hold back now? It's only going to frustrate people and make them less likely to buy the game.

And many sequels change so much and add so many new features that giving people a taste of what is to come will make them even more excited. The replacement of the demo, the teaser, is definitely not going to help their case. It's one thing to show people something, and another to let them experience it first-hand. They'll only be hurting their business by taking away the demos. The whole thing is so counter-intuitive.
