Okay, this is going to loose meh any cred. I have to say.....bit im getting desperate here!!
I have always been too busy working for things like games, But have now gained a lot more free time to play games, and also a lot of my mates are gamers, (and really good ones at that!) - so trying to catchup up with them is an impossible task...
...The bigger problem is that i am a complete and utter noob to them, however you say it, thats what I am!
I understand some abbreviations, but thats about it. When I try and learn games I can never get anywhere with it, and believe me over the last few weeks I have spent days on end learning/playing to try and learn games - and despite understanding the point of the game, I just can't get good at it - I feel like im lacking something big!
I have also googled and googled, but I have not found a huge amount,
I was hoping anyone here might be able to give me a few hints to get meh off meh bum!, maybe any links to good sites I have missed, basic universal skills?!
Any input is really really appreciated!, I don't know what im missing or doing wrong lol - but i seam to be an iddot at gaming, and just can't work out the tactics for gaming by myself!
Thanks a lot in advance,
Matt
P.S
Most of the games Im playing here are action/fighting.

I'm afraid there are no shortcuts for practice, practice, practice.
Sure, there are codes for getting more out of certain games but control comes
with practice.
A good case in point was watching my twin grandsons on their first PS2.
One held controller correctly and the other upside down. The one that was
upside down was all over his brother very quickly. It was crazy.
Of course both are all over me with no reservations of beating my butt every time.
Good luck. |

If you want to get good at the online version of a game, it's usually best to play the single player mode. It gives you a good feel for the game you're playing and can improve your hand eye coordination. It also builds up muscle memory. Meaning that after a while, pulling a headshot is no problem for instance. Or you can learn how to do a nifty movement trick or something. Anything that you can learn in the single player is going to set you on your way to becoming really good at the online game.
There is a problem with that theory though, and that is that the online game is much different. There are tricks and pitfalls that don't show up in the campaign mode. Online, you learn hiding places, good ambush places, strategies for winning a certain map, and all sorts of things you can't learn in single player.
Go through single player, then go to online and stick to your guns. Eventually you'll find a tactic that works for you and you'll stop being such a noob.

The same as the other guys have said, really, the only way to improve is practice. Play the game, if something goes wrong then go back, try it differently until you find a way that works. You're not going to be the world's #1 in a few days or a week, it's just something that you have to do and it only goes in real time, there is no fast forward button.
If they say "hey you're such a noob at games" say "yeah well I have a life beyond the screen" or something like that

ok thanks so much both of you. Very useful posts.
(I'll just clear up now though, they my friends don't play as 'hackers ' in the game or anything -we try to play it properly! - but of course that makes it so many more times harder for me to learn!!
The other problem is neither of the games (both online ones), do not have any single player modes, but you given me an idea there though of course, I guess I could go find a different game that does have single player, just take it up to learn basic tacktick e.t.c, and then move on from there...
Thanks a lot |

Don't rush through and just play it at the speed the game takes you and try not to get frustrated. Sometimes it's easy to get annoyed with it (I've been there many times ) but just approach everything logically and try to remember little tricks etc. You will get the hang of it after playing for a bit, you will become more used to how everything works and as Link said, you will build up muscle memory which will make it easier.
No problem mate, glad you liked it

Yup practice practice practice. It always takes me a bit to get used to a new game. Especially for online play. But after you play enough you eventually figure it all out, and remember the maps so your not lost all the time. (I hate that )
Out of curiosity what games are you playing?

We talking console or Computer games?

The thing is Se joka pelkää ei pelaa (He who fears wont play the game)
It's just to start to play the games. You will soon find a basic grip, then you are not in point 0 when you start to play another game. :P
Practice makes better.

A word of advice for driving games, use the in-car view and also use analogue controls if you can. Both will take some getting used to but both will help you to improve.
Hope that helps.

Car games advice too. If you have enough of money, buy G25, makes it more fun and realistic

One of the few games that I know of that doesn't have a single player mode is Team Fortress 2. With that you're just shoved straight into battle and you essentially start off not knowing what the hell you're supposed to be doing.
If it doesn't have a single player mode, go online with a friend onto a server with absolutely no one on it. Make sure that this friend knows the ins and outs of the game and can teach you all the necessary tricks and subtleties of the game. That's how I started with Team Fortress 2. Certain characters have certain tactics they need to employ, and having someone that can explain how to use them and why is an immense asset.

Guild Wars dude which one you got, I've got the original and Factions? Tactics, warrior/healer or ranger/warrior. Awesomely powerful, what are you anyway?
It's all about getting the right skills, don't just buy every skill you need to look on the internet and make sure you get the right ones. The game dosnt really start till you get to lev 20 and then its not all that good until you get PVP.
#1 rule tho, henchmen are crap if you'd doing a mission you need real people, henchmen are okay for the first island and wandering around but if you want to get anything done you don't stand a chance.
Also make sure you have some kinda teamspeak or skype so you can chat to people why you play. Makes it a lot more fun and easier.

Thats great advise, again though, thanks. Its things like that, that really help. and yeah, I have managed to get in on a vent server in a guild my mates are in, so that'll help! (the only thing is we had to make them think im decent at the game - so that could get very problematic!)
Thanks again mate Quote:

Hope that helps. | You're right there mate, you get used to cornering faster I prefer the view where you can see the whole car, though, so you can see where the back end and both sides are Used to use the bonnet view a lot, though
