With Sony and Xbox dominating over the years, do you think that Nintendo is battling back and becoming as big as its rivals (sony & xbox).
With the great release of the Nintendo Wii, many feel that Nintendo are becoming as popular as Xbox & Sony. But what do you think? Please let us know.

I think the wii is successfull at the moment for three reasons. The first and the most obvious is the price is substantially lower than the other two, making it an affordable alternative as all the latest games are available on it. Secondly, the games are also substantially cheaper, at £20 for many of it's titles. And finally the novelty of how it works. I think people are attracted to it for example they have a party, and play on it whilst drunk, would be a lot of fun. For the meantime they are the leader, but I have doubts that will remain in the next 2-3 years, when the prices of the PS3 and 360 both become extremely low. It's too hard to say at the moment, but personally, although I like the wii, I don't think the novelty of what it does will attract people forever.

I totally agree with you Josh, it is all about the long run.
But there has been people who play their xbox and/or playstation 3 for too long with out moving and have died as a result. Where as the wii you are active and getting exercise while you play. But we will have to see what Nintendo come up with next.

They deserve for something to go wrong if they aren't going to stop playing in my harsh opinion. Thats not the consoles fault, people have a choice. I own a Playstation 3, and millions of others do so, but that doesn't force me, or the rest to sit there for days on end playing it, with no breaks!
Also the Wii has got it's flaws. People losing control of the remote and damaging their TV's, furniture etc as a result, even though it states that the Wii remote is sensitive to LITTLE movement, people still swing it around like a samuari sword.
No console is perfect. But if properly used, nothing can go wrong.

I would like to own a Wii sometime soon, I think they are great. Like alex says, I think the retro appeal is one of the reasons forcing me to it, plus it looks a lot of fun, plus it's a console that doesn't look too serious, like the 360 and the PS3, it just looks fun!. When it comes to such things as consoles, I don't take sides, I think it's pathetic to do so, as the people that do normally haven't tried the others. Consoles are not really consoles anymore, more like "home entertainment centres" as they do so much more than play games.

At the end of the day, I play games on any console. I just like to play a game like Call of duty and have fun! Don't get me wrong, I like some competition now and again, but I think some people take games too serious.
For example Grand Theft Auto; People (especially in America) have been playing this game too much and have actually gone out and done the crimes you do on that game, which is completely unacceptable.
I do believe in stopping younger people buying 18 year old games. Many people ages 10-14 are having 18 year old games. Which I think they shouldn't be.

I dont think they are.
Nintendo is the longest life of consoles. BTW what happened to Saga?
Sony only came out about 16 years ago, Xbox did about 5 years ago

I reckon they've had the most success with the ds and wii. Quote: |
BTW what happened to Saga?
| They gave up on making consoles to work on software in 2001.

Sega fell downhill when Sony introduced their PlayStation line of consoles. Nobody was interested in Sega and they folded in the console market due to major loss in sales and no games companies wanting to release their titles on Sega's platforms. Nintendo have had some close shaves thanks to Sony. But the DS and the Wii have put them back on top form and leading the console market as they used to in the past.

I think the Nintendo Wii is competing with Microsoft's Xbox360 and Sony's PS3. Because they are the 7th gen consoles right ?, Though some poeple the Wii isn't a next gen console.

In a way the Wii is next gen as it shares some features with the 360 and PS3, e.g. wireless controllers with movement sensors in (shares latter part with PS3). But at the same time it's the same level as the GC, as it uses the same graphics as the GC and doesn't output an HD picture like the other 2 consoles.
Also it can't play DVD's, but future versions might be able to, and current ones with a firmware upgrade.
IMO MS rushed the 360 to get it out, and in turn had to release loads of packages and accessories to get it to match the PS3. For example, the wireless controllers are extras, same with the HDD and HD DVD drive.
Sega created their biggest competition and their own downfall back before the PSX was released. Sega was working with Sony to make a CD-based console, then decided they didn't want to do it with Sony any more. So then Sony took the technology that they helped develop and made their own console - an there the PlayStation was born Quote: |
I sure miss the days of SNEZ
| I have a SNES sat under my TV, right next to the PS2 I also have a SNES based forum if anyone's interested
