I've tried via Windows update which can't find compatable drivers, I'm looking for VIA Compatable Fast Ethernet Adapter, I've tried the VIA website which doesn't offer free drivers, also I have a Vinyl AC "97 Codec Combo driver (WDM) which needs updating too.
I've ran a PC Pitstop scan which identified the drivers needed but they also won't let you download for free, they point you in the direction of driver scan sites that aren't free!
anyone know of a free site for drivers please?

Your motherboard/computer manufacturer will usually have a page for driver downloads.
Why do you want to update them? Have they stopped working?
Tbh with things like sound and ethernet/LAN drivers, you don't really need to update them unless they start causing problems.

I'm not having any problems but thought it was a good idea to update the ethernet adapter and the Codec as Pc Pitstop advised it however, after checking out certain sites I find it to be a mine field! also I'm a complete novice at this and none of the details match mine exactly, perhaps I should leave well alone..

The only drivers you ever really need to update are your graphics ones imo.
It's fine finding out that you have old versions, but you don't have to have the latest version of every single one.
As Donna said, if it ain't broke, don't fix it

The few times I did get into a spot of trouble was because I had downloaded something I thought I needed, from reading others' posts and another time from a scan's suggestion, not knowing the difference between the media types (and finally realizing I didn't even have that media installed.
Anyway, I agree with the others. Leave it alone.
Or you'll go bonkers or blind or something.
There's many a good idea out there; not all end well.
