Should Auschwitz be left to decay?

Quote:
Historian Robert Jan Van Pelt says that once the last survivor has died it should be left for nature to reclaim, and eventually forgotten.

But former Polish Foreign Minister Wladyslaw Bartoszewski, once an inmate, says Auschwitz must be preserved to bear witness to the fate of its victims.

On the one hand the Holocaust must not be forgotten . but turning it into a museum just doesnt seem right

Well,
When the last Auschwitz survivor has died, may the slowly crumbling debris of decay
suggest the final erasure of memory.
Or...
If we let the memorial cease to exist, we will take a great burden on our conscience
- we will trample upon the testament of the victims.

There will never be total agreement on anything by everyone.

I would never go back to Vietnam to see any memorial or preservation of any
location where I lost brothers.
But I know some Vets that returned and had a huge load lifted from their shoulders.

To each their own........or........
Different people have different preferences.

I have not been to Auschwitz but my Dad took me to Belsen once a long time ago - and the thing I remember is the complete absence of any birdsong anywhere near the camp.
Perhaps we could say the time to abandon it might be when the birds sing there again.
