Childhood obesity is set before the age of five, ministers will hear from researchers later.
Compared to children in the 1980s, today's youngsters are fatter and most of their excess weight gain happens before school age, they will say.
| BBC NEWS | Health | Obesity 'set before age of five'
Well what a surprise when most children survive on a diet on junk food
We only have ourselves to blame

The problem is uneducated parents. Its not rocket science to do a bit of research on living an healthy lifestyle. Exercise is beneficial to everyone. For one, it increases life expectancy.
Oh, you also have the people who go gym then go and eat a kebab after. . I see those kind of people all the time. Just because you lift weights, doesn't mean you'll get massive muscles. You've got to provide the nutrients for your muscles to repair themselves and grow. Slightly different topic but it relates because they are uneducated.

Obesity is caused by two simple factors - an unhealthy diet (typically too rich in sugar and fats) and not doing enough exercise to burn off the calories consumed.
| Kids like sweet stuff its a fact
Too much TV and not enough outside playtime for one reason
Its not safe to let them out of your sight
ETA
Many overweight children have overweight parents - it's often a matter of family lifestyles.

| So, it's the parents role to make sure they get exercise. Quote: |

| Well that's obvious, but as they get older, they generally choose their own route. But, many of got so accustomed to their unhealthy lifestyle that it leads into adulthood, therefore the parents are to blame. You can't expect a baby to know these kind of things, it has to learn, just like a puppy.

There is another side to the coin
Most parents work both of them
There is not the time to prepare a meal from scratch for most people so they get a takeaway or a pizza
Sad but true

I'm not about to argue with any of the comments in this thread so far.
However, it's amazing (IMO) how much "expert" opinion varies.
"It is wrong to place all the blame for a child's excessive weight gain on the parents - it is more likely to be due to the child's genetic susceptibility".
From Obesity 'may be largely genetic', Feb 08.

Sad but true | Well, not being funny, but if you can't find the time, then you shouldn't have kids'.
I cook all my own meals, so I'm fairly sure other people can cook their food. And I eat more than 3 meals a day. Quote:

From Obesity 'may be largely genetic', Feb 08. | I find it hard to believe that the "majority" is genetic. That said, those who are genetic, then a healthy lifestyle certainly improves it. "An anti-obesity group said regardless of genes, a balanced diet and exercise were vital to good health. "

How can you let kids play Jason like i used to??
In the cornfields out climbing trees or riding around on bikes.. exercise
I'm not talking about 5 years old here but older
Will get some tit in a stolen car run them off the roads
Its a sign of Britain
We are a lazy couch potato nation
When we are not whining and complaining we are watching the box

There's crime everywhere, though.
I've had no problem getting exercise whilst being brought up. Also, you shouldn't be playing near roads, there are fields where you could go play football or just generally have fun. Parents should limit their child's time watching T.V or playing video consoles. Quote:

| You maybe, but not me. There just needs to be some motivation. With healthy meals in school, then it certainly is improving. Life's too short to moan at petty little things.

Your view will change Jason

My view wouldn't change at all. Also, I never said there was anything wrong with watching T.V, just limit it. People know how hard bringing a child up is, if they aren't up for the job, they simply don't have kids'.

I had a friend through most of Secondary School who was never overweight but weighed a small amount more than the rest of us (especially me, but an ant weighs more than me ) and his mum's huge, but he did lots of exercise etc in the school gym and playing sports. A year or so after we finished he moved to Surrey and I believe he lives near a McDonands, now apparently he's really fat. Try telling me that's about genes or parents
Obviously not everyone moves away and lives near a fast food place, but that's my story for this thread anyway.
I believe Donna was right in the first post though, so many kids live off junk food and it's nobody else's fault but the parents.
Jason makes a good point though, if you can't spare the time to look after your kids properly then don't have them in the first place. They don't raise themselves.
