My eldest at 14 got himself into trouble with MSN messenger and LiveJournal and MySpace. He knew the dangers, but was caught up in the moment (no friends in real life and here was someone that thought he was very interesting).
He met (online) another "kid" who turned out to be a kiddy diddler. The dude lived in Florida, USA and was planning a visit to a nearby town when my son finally told me about it, (after several weeks) but before it was too late.
I'd noted a change in my son's behavior (anxious regarding the computer/uncomfortable etc.) and then started reading his messenger messages.

At least you heard about it before it went too far.
A daughter of a mate developed a net based relationship with a youth she thought was miles away and who turned out to be the son of my mate's workmate. Certain amount of voyeurism going on as well, but the daughter eventually tried to stop the contact - this is when it went nasty as the youth started slagging her off at his workplace. I was asked advice (yes - why me?) and I said they should go to the police at once. They did and stopped the whole thing dead in it's tracks and hopefully the youth from doing anything like that again.

Texts and IMs take all the personal contact out of relationships. lull you into a false sense security..
Do you really know the person on the other end ??

That, Dear Donna, is a very pertinent question! Be serious for a moment.
Do you and I really know who each other is? I think not - OK we both come from the same part of England - or at least we say we do but what is the truth? And if adults (assuming we are!) can chat and flirt and mess around what is to stop kids doing the same? Nothing, and the big difference is that they do not know when to stop!

Its so different for chiildren Albert
They need protecting from the unsavory element of the www as a whole
I have had weirdos add me to MSN and then after a while turn strange
imagine that is your daughter on the end of that and it takes on a whole new meaning
I also have reported a few as well
