It has cost £4.4billion and is designed to unlock the secrets of the Big Bang.
But rather than providing vital information about the beginning of life, the world's biggest experiment could cause the end of the world, say scientists.
They fear that the Large Hadron Collider - due to be switched on in nine days' time - will create a black hole that could swallow the planet.

But what about the 2012 apocalypse? I mean, the world is predicted to end in 2012. People have said it will be like the film Day after Tomorrow. If it does end; it ends. Let a new age begin hehe.

Sod it, I have just took delievery of my new car, still if these scientists predictions are right about the black holes I wont have to bother renewing it. |

Scaremongering, that's all it is.
Centuries ago, people like this said you would fall off the edge of the earth if you went over the horizon. We later went on on to prove you wouldnt as the earth is indeed round and not flat as the scaremongers would have had us believe for ever if no one had dared to test the theory.
There's more chance of an Essex girl being able to parallel park her pink corsa than us ending up in a black hole because of the LHC
Anyhow, I dont care cos I am going out that night, there's a quiz on in the pub and nothing is going to keep me away

I don't think the machine is capable enough of creating a black hole. I am not very advanced into Science but I just feel that it doesn't have enough power to generate it. To create a black hole, it would have to rip through the particles that consist the space that is virtually the power of a supernova explosion. In short, if the experiment has potential enough to create a black hole, it can mimic a mini explosion that will burst the observation centre to bits.
Anyways, if the experiment is successful in creating a black hole, then I will be sorry enough to die as I could not see the results of the experiment.
Makes me feel like quoting Jason's belief:

I'm not entirely sure, some kind of ancient calendar I think.
They always say a date, but when it passes they give a new one. As long as it's not in my life time, then I'm happy. I do believe it'll end one day, though.

I just think it might end, it might not, why fret? It hasn't done yet after the billions of years it's been here......
C'est sera sera!

Planks!

Two years ago, Patrick Geryl, then 51, quit his job as a laboratory worker for a French oil company. He'd saved up just enough money to last him until December 2012. After that, he thought, he wouldn't need it anyway.

The end of the world through this experiment is complete codswallop. It's the biggest load of crap I've ever heard since the idea that whites were superior to everyone else.
Does anyone here even know how black holes work? First of all, the amount of energy needed to create them is enormous. It is feasible, but very unlikely. Secondly, black holes give off Hawking radiation. Even as we speak, the black holes that exist in our galaxy are slowly giving off this radiation and are fizzling out.
So in the event that this thing DOES create a black hole, it will only be for a fraction of a fraction of a second, and it will fizzle out before it has the chance to devour so much as a sandwich.
This new information also should tell you that the black holes that already exist will NOT in fact eventually eat up the entire universe. They will fizzle out and our lives will march onward until the REAL world-ender rears its ugly head.
The 2012 phenomenon is complete horse cookies too. Magnetic field reversals bringing about the end of the world? Please...there have been many reversals that occurred during the existence of the planet, and probably several that occurred during the existence of all life, our relatives included. So why are we still here? Because the field reversal wasn't as big of a catastrophe as we all seem to think.
This is in the same league as the Y2K s*** that people were spouting in 1999.
Hate to burst your bubbles, but we're all going to live!

No-one really knows, not even scientists.
Ever since the 6/6/6 (June 6, 2006) End of the World scenario did not pan out, the scare mongers have been touting the 2012 End of the World scenario. When 2012 does not happen either, I am sure they will think of something else.
