I can remember the day I let a Barney video become "the babysitter".
I swore it would never happen, me plunking a kid or 3 in front of the television while I went offf to do my own thing for a few. My own thing was to get away from them for a few; 3 under 5 years old and all in diapers and me a virtually sleepless single Mum. It was a sad day but that's when it began. I never made a habit of it, but had no friends and no other personal relief but the TV and/or videos to keep them out of mischief and fairly safe for the little while that I needed a break.

Many of the children's TV programs my lads watched were British or from "away", Sista as well as the stories. 3 each at bedtime, sometimes the same story 9 times *yawn*
Postman whatisname ... Pat, Lambchops, Thomas the Tank (we have the diecast collection times 3, because you can't buy just one. .... commercialism .... yes, I got caught in it) ... Noddy and on and on. They weren't the least bit interested in any version of Sesame street and besides Big Bird frightened da Prince We read a lot of Robert Munsch; fun to read as well, the language being parent friendly.
They also didn't like Romper Room for the same reason I didn't as a child: that freaky lady with her mirror could see children in their livingrooms but never "us"

Ack, Sista!
I remember spending hours with the lads looking for just the right leaves in the Fall to press between wax paper in old dictionaries and then we'd hang them up in the window as suncatchers.

I spent the happiest days of my life up to my neck in glue and glitter and bits of string
