Coming soon to an air wave near you ...
Will you be watching and/or supporting this year's Olympics?
I've not kept up with the Star's legit news ratings, so this may not be accurate, but if there's a grain of truth to this as well as other less and far more serious nonsense, well ... I'll, be boycotting the games. Quote:
BEIJING–When Chinese authorities announced that special zones would be established for people wanting to protest during the Beijing Olympic Games, Dr. Ge Wifei and her friends from the southern city of Suzhou took the government at its word.
But on Friday, when Ge arrived in Beijing to file an application to protest, in keeping with government guidelines, she got a rude awakening.
Four Public Security officers from her hometown suddenly showed up, put her into a police car, detained her for hours at a Beijing hotel, interrogated her twice, then put her on an overnight train with two police officers for a 1,000-kilometre journey back home, where she was welcomed by local police and taken in for yet more questioning.
And no, she was told in Beijing, she and her group would not be getting a permit to protest.

I should say, that I'm not a huge fan of sports as a rule, but at one time was an enthusiatic Olympics fan and rah-rahed with the rest when Canada did well.
But, I still can't justify the dollars spent before (jock training, and populace instructions on how to dress and behave) and location "preparedness" and the resulting city "renovations"), during these games, though nor can I ignore the politics associated with them.

Beijing is taking drastic measures to improve its air quality in the run-up to the Olympics. But is it possible to conquer air pollution in a short space of time? BBC NEWS | Magazine | The filthy air conundrum
I wouldnt want to try and compete in those conditions

To be quite honest I'm not really bothered by the Olympics. The BBC are showing some weird ads with ninja monkeys and pigs, don't know what that has to do with athletic events
Not a big sports person overall apart from the one obvious one. Yes... professional see-saw

Yeah, I agree, it was stunning!
But then I watched the news that came on after, which showed what they had to do to build all the stadiums for the olympics, and that kinda put me off it to be honest.

On the news it was showing people being thrown out of their homes and their homes being teared down just to make room for the olympics, with nowhere else to live and no compensation given. It made me sick.

I haven't been tempted to watch the ceremonies nor the competitions, but here's a spectacle for you. Quote:
Beijing, China (Sports Network) - The father-in-law of United States Olympic men's indoor volleyball coach Hugh McCutcheon was fatally stabbed Saturday by a knife-wielding Chinese attacker in downtown Beijing.
Todd Bachman was killed in the attack and his wife, Barbara, was seriously injured. Their daughter, 2004 U.S. Olympic women's indoor volleyball player Elisabeth Bachman McCutcheon, was with her parents at the time but was not hurt.
Barbara Bachman suffered serious, life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital for emergency treatment. Personnel from the U.S. Olympic Committee and the United States Embassy are assisting the Bachman family at the hospital.
The incident took place on the second story of the Drum Tower, a popular tourist site in downtown Beijing. The assailant committed suicide by throwing himself off the tower

I forgot to say in my first post, also, that my boss, a doctor, was asked to give medical clearance for a pair of patients who wanted to go watch the games; army vets with minor lung issues. They did not get to attend as my boss was not convinced the air quality wouldn't do the old pair in, and refused to sign off their clearance. He also, an avid sports fan and Olympic enthusiast, questions sending healthy lungs into that atmosphere, but he's medically biased.

I heard on the news that most of the fireworks were computer generated They set some off but then copy and pasted them so it looked like there were loads.
Also that other kid that sang something or other was miming and it wasn't even her voice because it was some other kid that apparently didn't look perfect enough for TV.
And they say that the runners and stuff are having trouble because of the pollution.
Not great stuff, overall.
Although I did turn the TV on the other morning and caught the end of some rowing thing and the UK won by loads hehe.

Final count with China most Gold and the U.S. the most medals.
Phelps broke Spitz's 36 year old record for most gold in an Olympics.
It was a good Olympics. But it was held in the wrong place for many reasons. |
