Afghanistan
Quote:
As the country continues to rebuild and recover, it is still struggling against poverty, poor infrastructure, large concentration of land mines and other unexploded ordnance, as well as a huge illegal poppy cultivation and opium trade. Afghanistan also remains subject to occasionally violent political jockeying. The country continues to grapple with the Taliban insurgency and the threat of attacks from a few remaining al Qaeda.

Alan i agree about the Russians . they couldnt stop the rebels

For 20 years this country has been little more than a battlefield with outside countries encouraging the fighting for their own selfish ends.

The West, which used to care so much about Afghanistan when the Russians occupied it, does not worry in the slightest what happens to it or how much its people suffer.

We definitely did go there under false pretences, I'm not denying that. But we went -- so what's done is done.

The Afghans themselves say they're sick of the Taliban.

And I never said we could win. If you look at Iraq now, then it's an hell of a lot better than it was. The reason you're all so against this is because your expectations are way too high. The goal is to rebuild the country. Maybe if you have a better idea then send it to the government LOL. Seriously, though, there's no better way. I definitely wouldn't want to enter negotiations with the Taliban.

As far as afghanistan is concerned if Russia who threw everything at that country and still could not defete the taliban, what chance have we got.
Russia could have used all its might and crushed the Afghan people, but other political motives stopped that. Eventually Gorbachev decided that the cost in human life was not worth the continued toe-hold in the area. Since then US have wanted an excuse to invade and modernise the country.

Vechislov Sivko said: "No matter how good your technology is, it can't level the mountains.".

The problem is this: They're not afraid of anything. You put a gun to their head, and they look up to heaven and say, 'Praise be to Allah!'. They're complete nutters. They don't deserve the right to live. They simply won't allow an invader to rule them. Plus, the land itself is an advantage to them.

I honestly believe if we got more countries involved, and attacked them from every angle, then we would defeat them.
