Good/Bad Brands List Discussion/Suggestions

Discussion regarding the thread here: Good/Bad Brands

Printers:

Bad:
Lexmark: Absolute crap and the ink cartridges cost a fortune. Make excellent door stops though.

Good:
Canon: Never had a problem with my mp360 at all. Ink cartridges are cheap and makes great prints of anything.

Regards Howard

Brother multifunction printers get a good vote from me, as do their after sales support. Ditto HP but only because they have print heads in the cartridges.

Added. I haven't had a brother printer but I have got a HP and it's nice, and cartridge prices are low.

Add another - Jettec ink cartridges (may not get these outside UK). Especially bad if your printer has a print head instead of the print head being in the ink carts.

Edit - in fact, any non OEM cart for any printer of any sort.

In my opinion, I would say ECS are a good motherboard manufacturer. I have an ECS motherboard in one of my computers, and i've never had a single problem with it for the years i've had it. I also know people with ECS mobos and have also had no problems.
Abit and Gigabyte are also a good motherboard manufacturers. Not sure about Intel motherboards, i've never had or tried one. Not sure about Foxconn either, but I think they seem to be getting better. EVGA seem to pull some good reviews out the hat also
As for Geil, I would say they are good. I've never known anyone have a problem with Geil RAM, and is fairly cheap.
As for coolers, Asus, Akasa, Skythe, Thermalright, Tuniq and Arctic Cooling seem to have some good ones. Not sure about Speeze, though they seem to have some good reviews, and are very cheap
Cases - Thermaltake and Coolermaster are also very good.
Samsung hard drives are very good

I think generalizations on many of the manufactures are going to be difficult. For example, I have two Lexmark printers, one is garbage, and I love the other. HP/Compaq laptops have been very problematic over the last 18 months, while I would say their desktop systems have improved quite a bit. HP printers (printer only) are generally OK while their combo printers & cameras have fairly good hardware (although a bit cheap) but the bundled software pretty much sucks. Gateway/Emachines still are pretty bad but not as bad as a few years ago.

Packard Bell and Blitzz are the only accross the board bad names that come to mind right now. Some would add AOL but minus the software their dial up network is actually pretty speedy these days.

True, but we can only go off our own personal experiences at the end of the day. If someone disagrees then they can say so and it can be discussed. I think we can generalise if everyone agrees. There are a lot of computer knowedgeable and experienced people accross this forum (yourself included ) and therefore we have all tried a wide vairety of components, peripherals etc. and were able to justify why we feel why one manufacturer is a good/bad/not sure. If a computer beginner wants to start building computers, or buy components for their computer then it's a simple guide of what to and what not to look for, or they can ask questions such as why a particular manufacturer has been put into a good section or bad.

i would have too agree with wechtec insofar as generalisation.

many people i know have had various lexmark printers snd some were quite satisfied.
i personally have a lexmark printer P4350, believe me i wouldn't buy another one. i bought it in February 2007 and by June 2007 i had three replacements. each phone call to lexmark( of course somewhere in india/pakistan)cost me on average £2.50 and each replacement produce the same fault, ie paper feeder.
oh! by the way, the warranty remained status quo ie from the date of purchase and disposal was at self cost.

Well yes, obviously people have different experiences with different brands, but this gives us a chance to see what brands have been good or bad for all of us in this forum. This is obviously not a definitive guide of what and what not to buy, just our views based on our past experiences. I do agree it's hard and judgemental to generalise, but it's only based upon our own experiences. If a particular brand has had some bad and good experiences among us then it will obviously be put in the "not sure"

When I had my Lexmark printer it was fine for a while, before one day it just stopped working and turned into a doorstop. Apparently, this is not uncommon. My main gripe with Lexmark, is the absolutely ridiculous prices of the cartridges.

I agree. I have a Lexmark printer, and the price for the cartridges is terrible. I have mine refilled to try and save some money

I've noticed before that it can sometimes be cheaper to actually buy a new printer than buy one of their colour cartridges, plus you'll get a new black one!

Only thing is you'll end up with a pile of printers in the corner of the room.

hehe

@Wektech and tomrca: I find brands can be generalized, and if something doesn't fit I'll put it in another section.

@Joshuashawharvey and Wektech: I just saw your post earlier, I missed it somehow before. Thanks

Can someone give info on which Lexmark printers are good?
