Another Interesting Crucial Memory Case

I've had a bit of an anomaly with my new setup.

I recently purchased 3 gigabytes of DDR3 1066 Crucial RAM for my pc, and whenever I start up my PC, it gives me a strange message. It tells me that "The previous attempts at overclocking is failed" and that it is going to load some defaults in their place.

The weird thing is, I haven't overclocked a single unit of my computer. And I even went into my BIOS, and checked that my processor and RAM were all configured properly for their CAS timings, front side bus speeds, multipliers, and frequencies. The RAM is running at 1067, CAS latency of 6, my processor is at 333mhz x8 so it's at the default of 2.66Ghz...

I have no idea what's going on.

The only way I can get it to start up properly and load windows is if I power it on, receive that warning, and press Ctrl+Alt+Del as a hard reset.

If I don't do that, it tries to force me to go into the BIOS to fix the settings that are already at default. FFS, WHAT is going ON HERE!!??

Well, I've tried resetting the CMOS, but that hasn't changed anything.

So off a hunch, I decided I'd test the sticks one at a time. I had two sticks, a 2 gigabyte stick, and a 1 gigabyte stick. I remove the 1 gigabyte stick and it works just fine, no error messages, proper and prompt startup, etc.

And when I replaced the stick inside the system, it game me the overclock error message again.

So it seems that my 1 gigabyte stick is having issues playing nice with my system. I'm not terribly sure if there is anything I can do to fix the issue myself since it's a problem with the stick and not my BIOS. Time for an RMA and get a replacement chip?

It supports up to and including a full 4 gigabytes of any given RAM for DDR2 667/800, and DDR3 800/1066. So 3 gigs shouldn't be a big issue to it at all. It's just a faulty part of the chip somewhere that's trying to overclock itself and failing, resulting in my error message.

I have tried it, yes. It won't even POST with the 1 gig stick on its own. And it was already suspicious just looking at the behavior with and without the 1 gig combined with the 2 gig.

It's definitely a faulty stick.

Right now it's getting a severe talking to. I've even laid it inside its original packaging, and it's sitting on top of my RMA forms. It KNOWS it did something bad.

Lmao

Sorry to hear that the one stick is bad. I hate RMAing stuff. At least newegg is good about it.
How come you just didn't get 2 x 2GB sticks? Would have been easier and you would have been in the dual channel mode.

Well for one, I'm running XP 32 bit. So I'd have been wasting a gig of my RAM. And for another, it was cheaper. I didn't have the money to order a full 4 gigs of the stuff.

How much did you spend? Ya I'm running 32bit also. Actually it sees 3.5gigs so only a half a gig is lost.

I was gonna say I got 4 gigs for like $45. But then I remembered that you got some DDR3 which is a bit more expensive than ddr2.

For all 3 gigs I paid about 75 dollars. It bumped up to $80.97 with the shipping fee. I thought it was actually quite a good deal considering the performance. But, of course a bargain like that can't be perfect all the time. Case in point, one stick defective.

Wow ya another gig would probably put it over 100 bucks. And now you gotta pay for the shipping for the rma. hopefully your new stick will be all good though.

Crucial Information About Crucial!!

link - I don't know squat about squat, but I do know this about Crucial. When you send for your RMA keep after them or you may wait forever to get it. I finally gave up and wrote them a nasty note and the next day I got my go ahead via email. They are slow to respond and for all I know I'd still be waiting if not for the note I sent.
They are great about turn around time however and got my new RAM back to me 3 days after receiving my returned RAM.
Just that someone in that authorizing dept. either doesn't care or is unmotivated.
Hope your experience is different.
Good Luck!!

Regards,
Len

Sorry you had all that trouble djlen, I know that can suck.
I can bet you that link590o got his memory from newegg though. And they are great on RMAing stuff.
Next time you buy a computer part I will give you a little bit of advice, if you live here in the US or in Canada buy from newegg.com best place around for anything computer.

I got way lucky in comparison in that case. I took a bit of extra time to send out my RMA forms because I kept forgetting, but when I DID send them, they arrived at newegg's place in under a week. And after that, they expediently looked at and confirmed my RMA. This all happened just a week ago. I got my shipping info a few days later, and my RAM is already somewhere in Hollywood Florida. So it's almost here.

So...er...yes, my experience was different and for the better. Sorry to hear that you had such a hard time.

OK, I mis-understood something. I thought since the title of this thread is "Crucial Memory Case" that you got yours from Crucial as well. Sorry about the mis-understanding....lol.
