On this PC there appears to be an overheating problem causing frequent and different BSODs. The cpu fan is dust free and seems to be going smoothly. The power supply fan also "seems" to be going ok.
I ran speedfan and pc wizard and got these, if they're any use:
I felt the side of the cpu after the most recent BSOD and it was too hot to touch.
There are just the 2 fans in the pc, one on the cpu, and the main power supply fan.
The side is off of the tower which was apparently helping for a while.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

I suggest you turn off your computer and unplug it from the mains.
Open the case and remove the heatsink. Clean off the old themal pad/paste from both the heatsink and the cpu die, using a little isopropyl alcohol and apply a very thin layer of new thermal paste to the cpu die. Reattach the heatsink and see if that helps at all. Arctic Silver Incorporated - Route to Product Instructions for Arctic Silver 5 |

Thanks, I'll give that a try next week and report back.

I would say that the 5 volt rail is more than a little on the low side. That could be the cause of your problems. The power/aux sensor shown with the high temperatures may not even be connected.

I still think that PSU needs further investigation. Dr S, do you have a digital volt meter?

I have a meter but....I was trying to use an old Power Supply unit but the plastic thingy won't unplug from the mobo - it's jammed solid; the plastic clip presses in ok but it still won't come out.
Also, I noticed there's a slight smell of burning
I did the arctic silver, and that plus more hoovering seemed like it had fixed it.
Then it started to randomly turn off - just the monitor - I've checked all the connections, still looking; but at least the hot cpu is not hot now.
Continuing.

Also, I noticed there's a slight smell of burning | You need to get in there and locate where the burning smell is coming from

A burning smell is very bad news indeed, it indicated component failure of some kind.

It definitely sounds like that PSU has thrown in the towel. Try jiggling the plug on the mobo to get it out, I usually find it easier to do it lengthways if that makes sense, to kind of try and get one side out and then the other, a bit at a time. I'm terrible at describing things like this You'd be best off getting it out as soon as you can and replacing it, to prevent further possible damage to your components.

Before you remove the PSU, is it definately faulty? You can test the 5v rail at any molex plug, just put the positive probe of the meter to a red wire and the negative to any black.
That particular test requires the PSU to be running anyhow.

The plug that goes into the motherboard is getting red hot. I think it may have got stuck because of that....maybe slightly melted
I can't see anything wrong but it deffo won't come out - I even tried pliars.
Now after starting it up:
It went to the desktop and then completely shut down.
Sometimes it starts up to a black screen - I mean the monitor appears to be off.
Haven't got the meter out yet - will look for it later
Maybe time to get rid of it???

If the socket wont come off then it probably means it has arc welded itself and it takes quite a few amps to do that. Chances are high that the mobo is damaged I would say.

Almost definitely a new mobo and psu required.
Please be aware, that unless you get exactly the same mobo, there's every chance you would need to format your hard drive. This is because your hard drive contains the drivers and hardware setup for what you have now and may well not work with a different mobo.

It's now condemned and sentenced to the bin.
Thanks for trying.
And for the witty remarks.
Solved (I guess)
