I may be getting hold of a P4 tower with it's own hard drive etc and XP on it. Wouldn't my old hard drive [well it's only about 6 months old] be usable as a slave or whatever? And all the stuff on it???
It's unlikely to have the exact same motherboard in it.

Prvided the replacement pc has a controller for the hard drive then you shouldn't have any problems using the hard drive as a slave. However, any software installed on that drive will not work correctly unless it is re-installed on the new windows install.
Is the hard drive an ATA or a Sata?

It's unlikely to have the exact same motherboard in it. | Yes, you would be able to use the drive as a slave and get your files off of it, though you may need to take ownership of the files. See HERE for info.

As i said before then, it depends if the tower pc supports the type of hard drive it is and also if it had a spare port of that type. Being a tower, it undoubtedly has plenty of physical space for it.
Just one thing tho, don't mount 2 hard drives too close to one another or they will heat one another up until one or both fry.
(Found that one out the hard way and fried 2 expensive scsi hard drives many years ago)

It's ATA as far as I know.

In that case, you will need a spare ATA plug. Most ATA cables have 2 plugs (excluding the one that plugs into the mobo). Many cheap, shop built pc's are only supplied with cables with the one plug.
Secondly, you have to make sure the jumper settings on both hard drives are correct.
There are 3 different settings, MA - Master, SL - slave, and CS - Cable Select.
Cable select is the easiest to use as the pc decides which is master and which is slave (the one on the end of the cable is the master and the other is the slave).
Both hard drives must be set to CS in order for this to be possible.
If you master and slave settings, then the hard drive on the end of the cable should be set to master and the other set to slave.
You cannot have 2 masters on the same cable and you cannot have 2 slaves on the same cable. You also cannot mix cable select with either master or slave.
I hope that is of some use to you, it took me a while to type it all.

Thanks anyway - I expect it will help someone in the future.
I was mostly concerned about the programs I've already installed and cannot reinstall. [free gift stuff that could only be installed in that particular time period]

If an installed program has all of its files in the one location then it should work ok. Programs that install files within windows wont work unless you can find each file and copy it across to the correct location within the new windows install. In practice, this is a near impossible and hugely time consuming process.

Dr S
When you get the new tower, put your hard drive in as Master, boot from the XP CD and do a Repair Installation of XP, have your COA key handy as you will have to re-activate due to the hardware changes (different motherboard and chipsets etc), it may activate online it may not, no big deal if it doesnt do it online just call the free 0800 tel number and go through the automated steps, if you do need to to speak to a MS rep then tell them you have had to do a Repair as your motherboard went up in smoke.
You will have to re-install all Windows Updates too.
Good luck
