Anyone got some news on DDR3?

A while ago I remember mentioning DDR3 having grown fantastically cheap and being told that it hadn't quite matured yet. I was just wondering if anyone knows whether or not it has made any progress and if there are some particular sticks worth purchasing. I'm thinking to eventually upgrade to about 2 or 3 gigabytes of DDR3 1066. But seeing as I have no clue what constitutes good timings or what a good CAS latency is, I don't even know what to look for, let alone if things have improved with DDR3.

Please...enlighten me!

Can't help you much on that but can say that ddr2 800 has come down a ton!
I just picked up 4gigs of corsair for 15 bucks on newegg!

I would love to get some ddr3 but my board doesn't support it.. oh well guess I will have to wait till I upgrade that lol.

You can't get DDR3-1066 mate. The slowest DDR3 you can get is DDR3-1333.

Well DDR3 has now gone really cheap. I've seen 2GB PC3-10666 Dual Channel sets for as little as £60.

As for latencies, from what i've seen, they range from 9-9-9-27 to 7-7-7-20 for DDR3-1333. I'd recommend the latter although it probably won't make a noticeable difference.

If you're getting 3GB in Triple Channel make sure you have a board that supports Triple Channel, i.e. LGA 1366 X58, otherwise it won't work.

I strongly beg to differ on that one mate.

Newegg.com - Crucial 2GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1066 (PC3 8500) Desktop Memory - Desktop Memory

There IS DDR3-1066. It's right there. And my current board supports said memory type. It even advertises said support right on the front of the box I got the motherboard in.

And can you elaborate on what a good timing is, and what a good latency is? Numbers mean nothing to me.

Seems I stand corrected. The lowest speed i'd seen in DDR3 was 1333MHz until now. I just find it a little silly how the have that speed in both DDR2 and DDR3 but with increased latency on the DDR3.

Decreased performance over DDR2 according to what i've just read. Also increased cycle time as a result of the slack timings, as I presumed.

You might want to look at these benchmarks

If I was you, i'd recommend getting DDR2 at that speed. It's cheaper and has tighter timings, and also a performance benefit over DDR3.

As for latencies. CAS of 7 is really quite high for 1066MHZ, when in DDR2 you can get the same speed with usually a CAS of 5. Even very cheap DDR2-1066 RAM won't have any higher timings than 6,6,6,18. When you see a list of timings, CAS is the first number in the list, e.g 5,5,5,15

For 1066MHZ RAM, i'd recommend timings that are no higher than 5,5,5,15.

The lower the timings, the better the overall performance (apparently)
