Need RDRAM

Authors note:
  • I am fluent in Google, eBay etc.
  • I know it isn't made anymore.
More info. here > New RAM advice please - Computer Juice - Forums

I have inherited a partially restored Dell Optiplex GX2 and am now trying to get it to speed up a bit. Its running XP Pro but only has 128MB of ram and 114 of it being used so it's obviously slow.

Getting this RAM is relatively easy but compared to current prices for a new stick this stuff is gold. I have also learned that the odd looking stick I describe in the above link is just a blank to fill in the slot.

By chance does anyone have a 512 (or more) stick of this stuff around that you won't charge me a fortune for?

From what I have been told I think I need either:
PC700: 16-bit, single channel RIMM, specified to operate at 355 MHz clock rate, 1420 MB/s bandwidth
PC800: 16-bit, single channel RIMM, specified to operate at 400 MHz clock rate, 1600 MB/s bandwidth

I'm going to have to buy some eventually. The computer does OK as is. I just can't really do 2 things at once.

OK so I have a couple of 128MB PC800 sticks, which are supposed to be compatible. Put them in and start the computer. Sounds like it is starting up fine but doesn't do anything. Other then the normal sound of an idle PC.

Any suggestions?

What happens if you boot with no RAM or sleepers installed? Do you get the usual error beeps?

Give me a minute to remove them and start up. I'm using the computer now.

Ah - so it runs on other memory sticks! Must mean that the speed is wrong I think. Can you see what the specs are for the working memory as against the not working memory??

Startup with no RAM produced plenty of beeps.

How do I determine speed?

EF,

RDRAM runs on completely different configuration than rest of memories.

If you are running on one stick of RDRAM, you need to put in the RDRAM blank in so it will work wiith a single or two sticks of memories. Do you have more than two slots available?

Only two slots. It works fine with the stick it came with and the blank. But if I try either of the two other sticks, in any order, it doesn't work.
