Here is one for you RAM experts!

Brand bew Asus P5Q Pro motherboard (no cheap trash here!) with 2 sticks of new Crucial BL12864AA804.8FE5. Refused to complete the Vista install so tried again with a couple of sticks of Kingston - no further problems.
Checking the Asus book of words is says that Crucial BL12864AA804.16FD or BL12864AA804.16FD3 is approved.
Is the difference enough to make the board reject the memory??

Not that I would imagine. I have memory in my computer that's not even in the ASUS approved list and it works fine. Nevertheless, it really wouldn't surprise me with ASUS if it did make a difference.

Try running the RAM at 667mhz and add a bit more voltage see if that makes it work.

My board originally cost me over £100 and that still does the most stupid things

Thanks - I have been told what it wrong I think - but cannot confirm it as the things have heat shields on them so cannot check - they have 8 HD chips on them instead of 16.
I'll run them on another board next week and check them - might be worth a call to Crucial anyway as I suppose they could have a fault.
