Missing memory in Vista

Packed Bell system shipped with 1Gb 533 DDR2 DIMM RAM upgraded with a further set of (allegedly) matched Corsair memory reports 2 Gb installed at BIOS level but Home Vista SPI only sees 1 Gb. Does not matter which DIMM installed in which slot - the results are the same.
Have not tried a matched pair of DIMMS but that is the next step if we have to!♠

If you put each module in on it's own is it detected as it's full capacity? in all slots too?

the old trial and error method trying each module to identify a duff module or RAM slot

how many slots? is it 2 banks of 2 that should be filled one bank at a time?

Hi Klunk
Every combination has been tried - including each DIMM in each slot on it's own (which is only seen as 1GB by the BIOS and the OS).

Odd indeed, a Vista nuance perhaps

The system belongs to a mate's brother and he has had all he is going to get over the phone so I suggested he drag it in here!

Right heres the link you pair of disbelievers
Neowin Forums > Vista and RAM

Vista sees 2.3GB only. i was at least expecting it to see 3GB since i already assigned the 1024 to the integrated graphics of my system.

In truth DDD, I have never seen a motherboard allocate more than 256 Mb of available memory to the on board graphics. I can't be bothered to check the spec of this board but I am not sure if that post isn't porkies!

Don't feel guilty, petal! I thought of it too!
If you stick that lower lip out any further you will fall over it, so do wind it in a bit!

Edit
Crucial have suggested that it might be something to do with the different densities of the memory - it now appears that one is a SIMM and the other a DIMM. Now they tell me!
More anon!

Have you checked the Packard Bell website to see how much ram it actually supports? They tend to use rather cheapo motherboards that are seriously restricted.

Yerp, did that too and it said we should be able to run 2 Gb on (but no more).
I think Crucial may have a point but it will be interesting to see if the BIOS says one thing and Vista says another!

Just making sure, do you mean that one is single sided and the other double?

That would probably make a difference if that is the case

As I understand it - I have not clapped eyes on the thing yet! Would make sense as either they are a matched pair or they are not!

Is the computer running the 32-bit or 64-bit version of vista.
