That may be the problem. I know their is a problem with vista showing 4 gig of memory. It can't it will only show 3.12 gig because of an architecture choice that was made long ago. It also depends on your motherboard/processor configuration as they can decrease the amount of memory that vista will show. Another thought is that the memory sticks my be incompatible with each other. I had the problem with some corsair and PNY memory I had a few years ago. Are the ram sticks the came brand? I know its a hastle but do you have any spare memory laying around that you could sub for one of the sticks and see of the issue still occurs. Also have you tested both sticks by themselves. On stick may have a bad chip in it that is allowing it to get past post but failing when the Vista boots.

As I have explained, the thing is not with me and I don't have any more detail than I have given.
The two modules both work, and in either slot. They are both seen by the BIOS at their correct values - it is Vista that does not see one of them. Corsair suggest it is because one is a DIMM and the other a SIMM - and we are going to replace them both with a matched pair of 2 x 1Gb SIMMS.
Will let you all know if I hear any more about it!

Hi,
Have you tried 1 stick per time to make sure they both work? I know that if a stick isnt working correctly it gives you the default beep but i have heard its been known to skip the beep and carry on loading windows, or if the deep has been disabled.

I can give an update on this as of yesterday - 2 matched DIMM units from Corsair have fixed the problem. As above, each stick worked in each slot but not together.

Sometimes it is better to take a step back and start from basics!
