Updating the Bios on my motherboard

Hello there

I just saw they have put out a new Bios update for my motherboard, and I was thinking about running it. I wanted to ask if you guys think it a good Idea to update or leave the computer the way it is. It's running fine. Its a EVGA NF680I SLI board.

If you're having no problems, then you don't need to update.

That's true, but not for everything. In this case, it is.

Bios updates are not like software updates and they represent a very real danger is messed up as a bios flash that fails, will kill the motherboard as well. That said, bios flashes are done when you have a hardware problem that you can read a bios flash solves, and that is the only time it is recommended.

The best thing to do is to look at the notes for the bios update to see what has been added or changed. If you need the update in order to say, use a bigger hard drive, then use it.

If however you do not need any of the updates then leave well alone.

As Hope Cassidy says, a failed bios update means bye bye motherboard.

The one and only exception i have ever seen to this rule was an old MSI mobo i used to have (i forget the model number now) that had a backup copy of the bios stored on a separate chip, if you had bios problems, you just moved a jumper and it would make a copy of the backup to the actual bios. It would correct a failed bios update.

Hello there

Well I when ahead and updated the bios last night and everything when well. I now have true temp and fan info now. and if I want to upgrade to a wolfdale cpu I can. The bios updated the way the board works with the Ntune program from Nvidia and if I wanted to I can now overclock the system. Not sure about trying the overclocking out. but it's nice knowing I can if I want to.

Thanks for helping out..

Glad to hear it went ok.

I updated the BIOS on my old mobo so that it would support a better CPU, that's the only time I have ever done it. Sounds like your update has fixed a thing or two as well
