Temperature Concerns

Well, I was making my cleaning effort today. I noticed that my CPU's heatsink had a thick layer of dust over the top of it, which no doubt was hindering the venting process.

So I removed the heatsink and cleaned it thoroughly, and then added a small dab of thermal paste to the baseplate which contacts the CPU.

Prior to my cleaning, CoreTemp was showing that my cpu was at about 51 C. After I cleaned and added the bit of paste, it jumped to about 62 C. Is the new thermal paste hindering the cooling process? And will it eventually break in and cool things back down? Or is it that CoreTemp is showing me incorrect temperatures?

I'm a bit concerned because 62 C is quite warm. I'd rather my poor E6750 were at a much more comfortable 49 C. I'm just at a loss about how to explain the temperature jump.

62 is a little on the warm side but not too severe. If you can, grab hold of your heat-sink and give it a lateral twist. This will help the paste to spread into a thin layer and will also aid your heat-sink in sitting as flat as possible against the cpu.

I would advise you to only do as i suggest with the pc turned off. Also, don't use too much force but use enough to make it move a little.

Let me know how you get on.

Well I've had another peak. I also feel completely retarded now that I realize what I did wrong.

It turns out that I hadn't secured the heatsink properly.

When I was doing my cleaning, I was trying to do it with as little hassle as possible by removing only the heatsink and nothing else.

That apparently isn't good enough because of the way the connectors on the heatsink work. They have two V shaped pins, and a straight vertical pin. The idea is you push the entire system downward, and then push the middle rod through and it spreads the Vs appart, securing it in place.

In order to get these things to snap into place, I had to lift the motherboard out again, and support the underside while pushing the pins into place. Once I finally fitted it snugly, I replaced all the parts and cables and powered it on a second time.

The temperatures this time were what I was hoping for. Core #1 was at 36C and Core #2 was at 40C and I don't think I could have hoped for better.

I also had another misadventure. I forgot the correct orientation for my power On, Reset, and LED cables. I had it so that the power LED was showing my hard drive activity. So I had to do a little switcheroo and got everything set back up correctly.

I really should buy a new frigging heat sink. This intel hunk of junk is REALLY starting to piss me off with the way it's set up. I'll be sure to write that down on my To Do list...

That Intel CPU cooler assy may not be the dogs b ollox but they are the most reliable in the biz - and they are designed to do exactly what it says on the box. Unless you have good reason to change them, I would leave well alone! Just keep the fins clear of dust bunnies which you have done anyway.
