Dell Inspiron 6000 question

There were a number of different models of this laptop produced, and many of them had different processors and chipsets. My sister has lately been wondering if it would be possible to replace the current processor in the machine with another made of stronger stuff.

I've had a look at the current chipset, and it has an LGA 775 socket. To be more specific on the make, it's an intel 915GM/GMS,910GML Express Chipset Family.

Ive heard that other models of the 6000 using this chipset have had other processors like P4s in them. But I have no idea if that's true, or if the bios of the motherboard would recognize and support such a processor in the event we replaced it.

Does anyone have any better clues than I?

Well if you could find a microprocessor then you probably could. I know you can't get them from newegg. And Dell doesn't seem to have them in their parts and upgrades. But I am sure you can get them from Dell somewhere. I just couldn't find anything about it. I would chat with a tech online. Maybe they can point you to where you can get one. Or even if you can upgrade it.
Hope that helps you some.

Hm...nothing I haven't already thought of...

I doubt any techies on Dell.com would care to know anything about the inspiron 6000. To them, it's old junk and they've forgotten about it and all of its support meanwhile.

I did some more googling though, and I eventually found what I was looking for. Apparently there's a whole line of Pentium M processors that will only fit this chipset. The Pentium M 780 appears to be the fastest at 2.6 ghz.

Meanwhile, since it has become so old, and the parts have ceased to be made, the price of these things has skyrocketed. I found an M 780, and it cost almost 700 or 800 bucks a pop.

Seems to me that if my sis wants to go through the pain in the *** job of opening this thing, and replacing the proc with a new one, she'll have to find an old m780 that was discarded by a frustrated or exhausted user. Or do the smart thing and spend the 800 bucks on a new laptop.

It never really hit home that these old things can be so damn expensive until I actually bothered looking up what it would take to upgrade this poor, tired old machine. I forget how long it has been, but definitely a good number of years have passed.

haha ya if your gonna spend 800 bucks on a processor that is outdated you might as well get a new laptop.

Its all about demand. If lots of people want them, the price goes up and up.

If it ain't broke, stop fixing it. Any chip you can find to work with this is unlikely to give you much of a performance boost - as already said, your money is best spent on a new machine. If you are determined to get the best out of this one, max out the memory and tweak the OS to get the best performance.
