So I bought this mobo off of ebay (Micro-Star MS-6734) and i put everything together w/ my cpu and whatnot.
Start it up, find out that my AMD Athlon XP-M 2800+ was running at only 800mhz from 2.1ghz. So i don't even bother installing windows.
I take that out and put my dad's processor in, thinking that it was a desktop processor since it worked fine with his Foxconn motherboard (my 2800+ didn't work with his as some of you will remember)
I start it up and installed windows. Then i noticed that it was running at 1.2ghz out of what i believe to be 1.5 or 1.7.
My Computer won't tell me anything more than it's an AMD Athlon, Everest too, but CPU-Z said that it was an AMD Athlon MP, so I googled that for a second and found that it was a server processor.
So my situation is this:
Is there any way I can get this back up to speed?
If not, would I be better off trying with the 2800+ and seeing what I can do with that?
Thx

I recon you have moboitis.
First off, clear the cmos. The manual will tell you how to do it.
If you have no improvement then update the mobo's bios.
Make sure you RTFM.

If you are going to update the BIOS be very careful you get the right version or your motherboard will become a paperweight.

Rik, I had no idea what RTFM meant until I looked it up....thx m8 lol.
I'll update this post once I clear it out. (unless someone posts after me.)
EDIT: Well, clearing the CMOS didn't do anything, so I'm using MSI's handy dandy Live Update tool to find all the updates for the board. After all that, I'll also use the BIOS updates they give me.
EDIT 2: Updated the BIOS. Didn't do much. I looked at My Computer and it now says AMD Sempron instead of Athlon. Everest now doesn't know what it is but Alias is Thoroughbred-B.
Belarc Advisor said AMD Sempron as well, and CPU-Z also said that.
I checked the CPU support page for MSI and the Semprons from 2200+ to 2800+ are supported, and I think that this cpu falls under that category.
I'm starting to think I would have been better off doing this with my athlon xp-m 2800+ instead.

Pop your CPU back in and see what happens. Never hurts to try.

grr....can't get the flippin thing to boot off the Windows disc. It goes to the part where it says
Boot from CD:
and it won't go anywhere, nor will it bring up where it says press any key to boot from it....stupid computers....
EDIT: Nevermind, I got it to boot from CD, but before it did that it started up windows as if i had the other processor in there. I checked My Computer and Everest, and they said Unknown CPU type as well as the post screen thing in the beginning of start up. They all read 800mhz.
Also, CPU-Z knew what the processor was, up top but for the name it had Unknown CPU type.
Wtf...stupid junk....help meh out lulz...
INTERESTING EDIT:
Thanks to the help of a friend from Bleeping Computer, we found an app called RightMark CPU Clock Utility that allows me to change the multiplier at will putting out speeds anywhere from 500mhz to stay cool all the way up to 16.
Once I got the multiplier changing to work, i started fiddling with it. I put it up to 13, which gave me around 2.125 or something. Then I wanted to see how high I'd be able to push it. I attempted 16, but the computer froze on me. Restarted it, and tried 15. Froze again. I restarted it once more and put it at 14, effectively giving me 2.33ghz. Only a few seconds later, something ran through my mind "What about the temperatures!!" I remembered reading something that said when a processor hits 70c+ things could get bad. I opened Everest, and to my shock there it was: 73c. I yelled a couple of profanities and began to rush to the program to lower the clock setting. As I began to do so, the computer suddenly shut down, thus ending my traumatic experience of the day.
I now know that cooling has become a serious issue with this. Apparently, the processor burns up a lot faster than it did when it was in the PC Chips motherboard. setting the multiplier to 10x (1.67ghz) quite quickly puts me up at 66-70c.
I'm now in a bit of a pickle, because I can't raise it high enough so that it would reach it's former levels, nor can I play a game for fear of it overheating.

Uh oh, that is a real problem. I hate to say it, but I don't think you are gonna have much luck with any of this. Your right in saying you wouldn't be able to play any games with it around 1.7ghz. Usually the CPU goes up 5 to 10C (at least in my case) when playing a game. So most likely you would just crash it all the time. And any lower ghz you still can't play anything because it won't meet the requirements. I feel bad for you man, seems you pretty much wasted your money on that motherboard... that sucks.

Forgot to mention, a few days ago, I solved the problem.
The Processor was covered in Thermal compound/paste, so I cleaned that and the Heatsink off, and applied a new layer of it. Now it runs at the right temperature although WoW often freezes almost as soon as I start playing...
