Grandma on a fixed income just brought me her computer that her grandson "fixed" up for her. Seems at some point he lifted the processors heat sink, wiped off the goo, and then put the heat sink back on. The result was the computer would turn on for one second then power down. There should be a society to protect grandparents from their grandkids.
Anyhow, this is a reminder to those that tinker with a computers motherboard, always use thermal compound when dealing with CPU's and heat sinks. If you can not afford the thermal compound, then you can not afford to be messing around.

Very good advice mate.
It never ceases to amaze me how some folks just think they can mess around inside a computer without knowing what their doing.

You can always tell a quality build from the way the cables are tidied away.

I try and make all my points valid - just that some of them end up in the wrong thread sometimes.....

Yeah, I bet they didn't even know what the CPU was. If it's not broken, don't fix it.

And another thing....most people seem to think that the more compound the better - in fact merest the thinnest smear is enough: after all, it is only supposed to fill the gaps.

Very true, mate, put too much on and you can end up stopping the heat getting through!

So why is it that so often we see the things looking as if they treat the compound like custard? I'll grant it says nothing on the packaging but common sense should dictate that this stuff is not a glue. Perhaps it should not be a paste - shall we start a campaign to have it renamed? CPU Smear?

Very true. The people that know the least are the ones who think they know the most. For instance my friend's dad regularly builds computers, though in my opinion doesn't have a clue what he's doing. Anyone can put a few bits together, but it's the quality in which this is done which makes someone who knows what he's doing differ from the idiot. When it comes to thermal paste he floods his CPU with the stuff. I once said that you only need a tiny bit of thermal paste, and his reply was as though I was speaking another language. He probably doesn't even know the purpose of thermal paste, and there's no telling him, after all, he knows best |

i was surprised to discover how many people didn't know if the thermal paste was to interrupt or help dissipation of the heat
perhaps medicinal compound would be just as good for some ;haha

I guess I must have it about right - machines I built 7 or 8 years ago are still coming in for replacement. Not commercially sensible to build them to last that long, tho!

The Antec ( think it's Antec ) Arctic Solver 5 that I have has instructions in the packaging. If these people putting the whole tube on one CPU had enough common sense to look for instructions, then there wouldn't be a problem

Hehe, I would look but it's on my "PC Bits" box, aka my mobo box, and can't really be bothered to get it out right now

There's nothing on the site about it... time for an investigation, maybe?

Why is it that people don't RTFM? (Sorry = Read The Effin' Manual) That's all it takes. On the other hand, it is these pillox that keep some of us in business!
