Angry What is THE most annoying computer problem you have ever come across?

Thought this thread might be a bit of fun.

My most annoying one was an old pc of my own. It just refused to boot. I got no error messages and no error beeps. It would show the bios screen for a second or so then nothing. It didn't power off the monitor either, it would just sit there.

I spent 3 days pulling it apart and putting it back together to no avail.

I think 3 days shows i am a patient man, but my patience was wearing thin.

I eventually had had enough. I yelled "start you b'stard" at it and kicked it rather hard, and, you guessed it, it booted up!

It turned out to be a bad connection in the power connector to the hard drive. I wish i had found it another way tho, i kicked my pc so hard that i cracked the front panel almost in 2.

hehe. I haven't had many that are that annoying (because i've only been interested since September '07) but I do know that I:
a)dropped a pretty expensive heatsink and fan and broke part of it off. Still works though.
b)salvaged some ram, which, not long later stopped working for no apparent reason.
c)bought a case fan with screws the wrong size.
d)When I didn't know about power supply's voltages I bought a really expensive Jeantech, and plugged it in. The voltage switch was on wrong and the power went out in the house, there was a huge *bang*, the side of the case went flying off and, of course, my power supply died.

The most annoying problem I`ve ever had is:

My computer kept on running slow for no apparent reason. I`d then do an image restore and it`d run fine for a few days, then suddenly slow down to a crawl again.

I tested hard drives/ram/mobo/psu etc etc all to no avail. This went on for several weeks lol.

It turned out to be a bad connection in the molex connector to my dvd drive that was the cause. I fixed it and have had no further problems since.

Another irritating one i had was a mobo that just wouldn't boot while in the case.

I took it out of the case it booted fine.

Turned out that the head of one of the screws was shorting 2 pins out on an ic, i fitted a fiber washer under the screw and it worked fine.

Yeah, these kind of problems can be very frustrating and hard to find, as they`re not obvious.

There the most annoying problems you got that right. I'm having one now, but everything in my computer works. Going spend a good few hours on it when I've had something eat.

Indeed Howard.

2 months later a friend had the same problem of his mobo being fine out of the case but not in it.

I had a look at it and it was caused by a standoff in the wrong place shorting the back of his mobo.

One of the most irritating problems i've come accross and is very easy to miss. When i've been building computers in the past, I have booted up and the hard drive will not work. After a long time looking still no avail, but then I clicked in, the flaming jumper settings :P

The biggest problem ever for PC's is Norton, but I don't use it myself

The most annoying thing that happened to me is when my PSU shorted once and I had to wait 3 weeks until I got paid to get a new one. No PC for 3 weeks! Imagine!

I have had to admit defeat on this one:
running multiple monitors (3) on 2 (x GeForce 7600GS) some functions will only work properly on the primary monitor.
Example is outlook express; open an email with an attachment and I can only open the attachment if I drag the email window onto the primary monitor.
I have tried all the different drivers, setting different monitors as the primary - no difference.
I'll live with it as I am not giving up on these screens now I have got used to them!
Unless someone knows different?

Cheers mate it was about this time last year, I think, but I'll keep that in mind

I don't know if it actually would have been repairable or not, but you never know. Although it's long gone now so I suppose we'll never know

I managed to kill mu psu a couple of years back. I was working on my pc at a friend's place (can't even remember why) when i blew the psu big time i.e. a bang and smoke.

I had only gotten it 2 weeks or so previously. My friend was really worried and wanted to replace my psu (had used it to test something of his just before it blew in my pc) but I said to not worry about it and that I would fix it in the morning.

I was secretly panicking because i didn't have enough money to buy a new one. I pulled it all apart and low and behold the rectifier diodes had blown. I popped to the local maplin, got 4 new 1n4001's, soldered em in, fired it up, and all was well.

It cost me a massive total of 16p to fix my dead psu.

You think that's bad Dave? I haven't had my main PC (Super Fast) for about a month now due to a number of problems. It's now up and running and I'm loving it.
