The modified car thread

Hello everyone,

Not been around here alot lately, anyway recently got myself a new car and yes... ive been modding it already...

Anyway basically its a 2001 Vauxhall Astra SRi, its the 1.8 16v model, pretty quick car compaired to some, but later this year / next year hopefully will be fitting a Z20LET 2.0 turbo, at this point i'll start tuning this engine too, so hopefully will be seeing some big BHP by mid next year.

Anyway, bought the car standard, obviously been a 2001 car, it had a few odds and ends the needed sorting, ie cracked center console, few stone chips etc, which i'll be sorting out. Ive got the new center console in and fitted though as the pics will show.

Sadly i didn't get any pictures before i put her on kw coil-overs so you might not understand just how much shes been lowered.

Anyway, you'll get a good idea as to the work ive done from the pics so i'll let them do the talking.

Front end stripped ready for some mods, including new headlights fitting.

Sadly forgot to take pics before i'd already started taking her apart!

New induction kit with blue hose, sadly forgot to take pics before, but you can her stripped down above with standard air box, this is only for temp measure till i fit the Z20LET

Sorry i tried to keep it within reason, but i guess ive posted abit much for this thread, feel free to seperate it for my own thread if you feel necessary.

More mods to come as always though.

Cheers.

Thats pretty dang sweet man. I want to eventually get a air intake for my 2003 ford ranger. and would love to get a turbo kit of some sort for it. but kind of expensive, so that won't be for a long time. Nice looking car, in good condition for a 2001.

That's a nice car, Dan, my mate has a 1.8 Astra Coupe in black, and that looks like the coupe console to me

Nice Angel Eyes as well, my mate wants them too hehe.

I've got me little Corsa and all I've done to it externally is put some eyebrows on, which aren't really attached in any way, just spray painted fibre glass (with some sort of coating on the front and some primer) and held on under the front wings

You should get de-badged grille as well mate, the Irmscher one with the little car is the best hehe.

Ooh, and some Lexus Lights wouldn't hurt

Looks in good condition though, mine has all manner of scratches on it hehe, plus it looks like the passenger door's had an argument with the post at some point, and it's been popped out and touched up not very well. Plus on a windy day at work it got some more rather nasty scratches on either of the doors (one each side, quite deep - down to the primer ) gauges they are hehe.

@ BW: eBay is good hehe

I'm not sure what you mean mate, but headlights like that are usually called Angel Eyes. Search for that on eBay and see what comes up, you'll soon see

If you search for Astra Angel Eyes then you might even find ones like that hehe.

Not sure what the butt thing's about though

Firstly, thanks to everyone for the good feedback, glad to hear everyone likes it

I'll probably be back with some more updates in the near future, as of now ive just mounted my CD changer, and am awaiting my mounting gear for the Pioneer Avic-X1 so i can get the head unit installed!

I'll also be doing some more modifications shortly, hopefully including a willwood 4pot conversion with big disks up front.

Oh and to answer the headlight question, dave is bang on the money, they are indeed 'angel eye' headlights, or also known as 'projector headlights' Excellent conversion in my opinion just a damn pain to fit on my paticular car!

Thanks for the feedback mate, glad to hear you like it too.

Yeah your right there, the console is indeed from a coupe, but actually the coupe turbo.

Ive also got the steering wheel from the GSI awaiting install, i want a new airbag though before i bother to install this wheel.

Considering my car is a 1.8 its pretty quick, and can more often than not see of the 2.2 N/A Astras, quite supprising really.

Hopefully as a first mentioned though the Z20LET will be in later this year / next year, i'd love to have such extra power, its considerably more powerfull than what i currently have, and should be reasonably an easy conversion unless i run into issues!

Corsa's are great little cars, my brother has one and hes been building a new engine to drop in it, hes gone down the redtop root, throttle boddied, so no turbo, but in the size and weight of the corsa its going to be extreme, it'll put my Astra to shame to be quite fair. Hes also uprated just about everything internally so its good to rev to a good 8k RPM easily without hassle and above, and of course the option to turbo in the future is always available, though such power N/A is going to be more than enough and will see just about every car on the road off, nothing much is going to be coming past it when finished, bring on the evo's, scoobys, BMW's, Mercs, etc, yeah its going to be pretty unreal, in particular if he does go ahead with the limited slip diff.

Hope you get into doing some car mods mate, eye brows always look nice on all cars if colour coded nicely.

If youve got bad repairs, or scratches down to the primer, please tell me your going to put them right??

The corsa with abit of money spent on it could quite easily become abit of a 'weapon' or 'sleeper'

I have a touch up kit so I'm going to get the scratches sorted on a nice day hehe.

I got some eyebrows from eBay and sprayed them myself, probably could have done with another layer or two of clearcoat though hehe. The colour matches perfectly and they look really nice IMO, they're a nice subtle mod and always look good

I probably could make it quite the sleeper, but it's only a 1.0 3 cylinder engine so I'm going to get rear window tint eventually (just medium stuff, not too dark) and leave it at that. Thinking of a Fiesta mk5 Zetec next year depending on how much money I have, so might do that up a bit more hehe. I could do with colour coded bumpers, because I have the base model so it doesn't have them, and I might get a de-badged grille eventually, but I like this one for now hehe.

My mate with the Astra Coupe put an air intake thing off of a Vectra on so it's about twice the size, so he gets a lot more throttle response and a bit more power. I don't know if I've given it the right name, but it's the pipe thing that goes from the middle behind the bonnet to the air filter. I've only ever seen them on Vauxhalls though, unless it's a thing with more recent cars.

Wouldn't mind this, 3 litre twin turbo

Plus I've come up with the ultimate numberplate hehe:

£799 though (The plate, not the car )

Nooooo now youve got a feel for V power don't change over to Ford. V power for the way!

Good to hear your going to sort those scratches, i too on a nice sunny day am going to do a little bit of a touch up in some areas, and give the car a good wax, i know the paint work will come up amazing once done, not that its bad now, but i know it'll be much nicer!

You could easily make your car quite a sleeper, keep it looking somewhat simple and drop a 2.0 redtop engine in, you can buy all the conversion parts you need, if your mechanically minded you'll find it a simple enough conversion. Instant power!! In a car the size and weight of a Corsa B, you'll find you'll blow off the huge majority of cars your ever going to get against on the road.

A debaged grill would indeed look nice on your car, and also a nice set of angels wouldn't go a miss either

Oh and the cold air intake pipe your talking of is the Veccy C pipe, its a good upgrade if your still using an air box for the air filter, but as i'm no longer using this, it wouldn't be much of a benefit if at all at the moment, when i upgrade to the Z20LET, i'll review the situation again if i just use airbox with K&N panel filter, but we'll see.

--------------------------------------------------------

On another note, ive got some work done on the car, my fittings arrived i orded for fitting my Pioneer Avic-X1 head unit, after quite some time removing panels, fitting a serious ammount of wiring, re-fitting the trim i got all the wiring for the radio in place, the hide away unit i put under the passenger seat, running all the wires so none is visible isn't the easiest thing ive ever done to so many locations!

Also ive got the 6 disk CD changer mounted in what used to be a little compartment in the boot, although it does stick out a little, i bolted it in place and made my own facia so its a nice job now, far better than it rolling around in the boot!!

Ive also been busy running wires for my amplifier, as you'll be able to see in one picture its a nice thick gauge wire, and for the size of amp i'll be running on it, it should help stop voltage surges and keep a good voltage online for better deeper bass. I might add a decent capacitor soon aswell to be sure theres no voltage drop on heavy notes.

Ok anyway enough rambling, just to sum things up, the head unit and everything that belongs it, ie disk changer, satnav, dvd, everything on it works fine.

So moving on heres the pictures:

Please excuse the dirty boot, it needs a good clean as does the rest of the interior, hopefully i'll get the time this weekend!

Cheers

EDIT: Also please note, the little cover isn't on the CD changer in the above pic, i still need to put it back on.

That's true mate, but then I'd have to upgrade the gearbox, brakes, probably the suspension. Oh and it would probably benefit from bigger wheels and better tyres It just means a whole lot of effort and money that I don't have at the end of the day hehe. Plus that thing's little chassis might not like having a 2 litre lump in it

Another possibility for next year is a Corsa C, dunno what engine, but that depends on the insurance groups really. They look pretty nice when done up too, especially with the rear lights going down the sides.

That reminds me, my mate put a K & N panel filter in so he basically upgraded most of the air intake system hehe.

Oh yeah, Dan, remember not to have the centre fans on when that screen's out

Yes, please:

Update on me motor

Put a de-badged grille and Irmscher i logo badge on the other day, I thought I would do it eventually when I got bored of the standard grille, and last week was that time hehe.

It's a bit weird because it makes the 'brows stand out more

Oh yeah, the numberplate thing is because I registered on a forum called Corsa Sport, so made a thing to put over the plates instead of a boring white box

I need to get a new passenger wing mirror so the plan is to get two new ones, and colour code them, so it will look way nicer. Need to update my spreadsheet, though, so that I know how much money I'll have left this month

I've been thinking about the next car (even though it's a while away) and I'm liking Corsa C SRi's. Black, 3 door, 1.4 petrol. A bit specific but there you go hehe. Here's a pic of one from Autotrader.

I really like them alloys, and the best part is they're like smaller versions of my mates ones hehe. That specific one is '04 with 28.8k miles, which is fairly good, but it's also £4800

There's one like that but '00 at a garage near me so I might see if I can have a go hehe They don't have to know that I don't want it for 9 months yet

Edit: Made us a new thread

Your pic is missing there Dave. Or at least I can't see it.

Your car looks good. I like the front plate its pretty cool. I got a Jeff Gordon one for the front plate on my truck. If you don't know who Jeff Gordon is google him.

HAHA, you did a new thread for "modified cars" and I posted to late. lol

LOL, I posted in this one and you moved mine. haha. I have bad timing.

Haven't heard of that chap so I'll google him now

No I can see the pic of your car. But the one that you tried to put up from auto trader is not there. I should have been more specific.

OOhh thats a rather nice looking car. I like it.

Yup Jeff Gordon, the best driver on the circuit right now. Well at least stats wise.
He hasn't been doing great as of late. Just got third this past saturday race though. yay!

That's good mate, nice to see you have a chap you're rooting for

I edited the image code in my other post, as the thing that Autotrader uses for images isn't a link to a jpeg, it's some sort of weird php thing I think. Anywho, it should work for everyone now as I used the same link as my last post

Glad you like it mate, normally they have a chrome thing along the top of the front grille with the Vauxhall badge on as well, but I'd put one on similar to that anyway eventually so mine would like that too hehe.

Nice one Dave, the grill makes a good difference to the over-all appearence to the car, they always do.

If you do something to the headlights or change them, and swap the girll, you'd be seriously supprised at the difference it makes, it really does transform the car.

Looks like your catching the bug swapping bits, before you know it, you'll be running 300BHP C20LET

I do have to be honest, i personally do much prefer a nice corsa B over any corsa C, i know C's do have good potential too, but in my opinion the B is a much nicer car all round and there is so much available for this car at a reasonable price. The modding potential is endless in my opinion.

I know cars get old and all, and i agree, upgrading breaks and suspension etc is a must, but this basically builds a new car if the shell is in decent shape, and will be good for many years to come.

If you ever consider lowering it, please do put it on coil overs and slam her.

Oh and please tell me your considering buying some alloys?

-----------------------------------------

As a side note, ive also done some updates myself though haven't posted them so i'll do it now.

Firstly, i fitted my 6x9's in the parcel shelf, disconnected the rear door speakers and ran complete new uprated wiring from the head unit into the boot for these.

I can honestly say it is now getting to what i consider a stage where it can be listened pretty loud at all times, the sound is great. I thought uprating the wiring was a worth while job on these, and i'm sure it will have made a good difference over the extended standard wiring.

I have also got my sub box and amp connected in the boot, i need to finish off a few odds and ends and give it a good clean, as i do the parcel shelf to be fair!

Ive not pictured the sub box and amp as of yet, though i will do in the near future.

Also, ive swapped the exhaust to a better one now, its all stainless, has a nice note, but isn't loud unless you start nailing her, then then it starts to pickup and gives abit of a roar.

Also swapped the grill, bought the OPC grill, cost me just short of £100, but in my opinion well worth the money as it really does look the business on the front end.

Anyway, with that out of the way, heres the new pictures:

First up the new exhaust

6x9s in the parcel shelf, please excuse the mess it needs finishing up and a good clean, you may also catch abit of the sub box in the bottom of the pic.

Then lastly, for the time being, the new grill fitted, i think it looks great, and oh yeah before anyone says anything opel = vauxhall, in certain parts of the world, the astra does indeed have opel badges instead of vauxhall ones!

Cheers

EDIT: Please note the exhaust isn't final as you can see in the picture, i need to cut out a bigger space in the bottom of the bumper, the original is far too small and is catching a little and i'm worried the heat won't do it any good long term. I need to replace the exhaust bolts anyway as they are on their last legs, at which point i'll cut that out abit bigger and all should be good!

Man I love that car! It is sweet! I have no idea what kind of car it is, though you said in a earlier post. But I doubt that there is that type of car in the US.
Looking good though!
