If your going to buy a laptop - buy a Dell, simple as that.
I used to repair laptops on a regular basis, Dells are a well built machine, and when you buy a decent spec, you'll pay the price, but more often than not they have great performance, and you don't get alot of the common issues with many other laptops ie cracking plastics, in particular on the back of the laptop lid!
If your interested in one with a decent graphics card, check the XPS range, i peronsally own an XPS, its a solid robust bit of kit, and its had some hard work through its time, and it runs flawless still to this day, the one i have in question is an XPS M170 Gen 2, though its abit bigger than your adverage laptop due to its 17" widescreen, you can also get some very nifty small XPS machines with top spec components at fair prices.
Alot of laptops now days are built on the cheap, and that is reflected after a year or so worth of use.
Of course i can't force anyone to buy a Dell, but i'd extremelly recommend it, of course if you do buy one, buy a reasonable spec machine to start with.
