I've had a OCZ 60g Apex SSD for about three weeks or so, and to be honest, it's not what I expected. It's for sure quiet, and if nothing else, that's a big plus for me, but for what it cost, quiet alone does not cut it for me.
After reading all the reviews at NewEgg and other places about 10 second booting and all the other benchmarks that rave about SSD's, I'm very disappointed. Granted, it does boot a little faster, but that may be because I'm running Windows 7, 7068. And I'll admit that it seems to load games faster, namely HAWX, but again, that may be Win 7, just not sure, and I don't feel like going back to Vista or XP just to find out.
I think that for OCZ SSD's, the Vertex line is probably a lot faster, but of course more expensive. But I'm still not convinced that these drives are worth what they cost. I think the price WILL come down soon, as the one I bought at NewEgg has dropped $20 since I bought it, and I could now get the Vertex for the price I paid for a Apex.
After a lot of reading on the OCZ SSD forum, I saw a comment that you need a motherboard not over six months old in order to take full advantage of these drives. This is a big minus in my opinion since all of us cannot afford to upgrade our whole system every six months. My mobo is not that old and I feel anything coming out should be compatible, or I should say fully capable, for computers older than six months.
Anyway, I guess all this leads to my opinion, that SSD's are not worth the cost now. I wish I had gotten a 10,000rpm VelociRapter.
